Description
Gilbert M. discusses his roots in Williamsburg, South Carolina, and his family's farming background. His father worked as a farmer and also did occasional public work in sawmills and railroads. Gilbert left home at a young age due to dissatisfaction with farm life, initially working as a water boy for a railroad in North Carolina. He went on to work at Henry Ford's company in Detroit, Bethlehem Steel Company in Buffalo, and eventually settled in Homestead. He went home to work on the farm and married his first wife but lost touch with his family after settling in Homestead. Gilbert M. further discusses the 1919 steel strike though he wasn't there at that time. He worked in Homestead for 56 years.
