Description
Jonas Salk in his lab in the Pittsburgh Municipal Hospital for Contagious Diseases (built in 1941, it was purchased by the University of Pittsburgh in October 1957 and renamed Salk Hall). Salk came to the University of Pittsburgh in 1947 and in 1948 began research on a vaccine for polio. Salk lead the research team at Pitt which would lead to the development of a killed-virus vaccine in 1955 using three strains of the polio virus.
