Description
Gothic; The St. Laumer WindowDelaporte no. 66, Deremble-Manhes no. 142aSt. Laumer (also called Lomer or Laudomarus) was the 6th c. founder and abbot of the nearby monastery of Corbion. His feast day was celebrated at Chartres on January 19. He was mentioned in the two Chartres Lectionaries, ms. 507, f 61r (10th c.) ms. 500, f 41v (12th c.).Panel 1: Laumer visited by a bishop of ChartresAccording to the life of St Laumer in the lectionaries listed above, in Laumer’s old age, Malard, the bishop of Chartres, asked Laumer to come to Chartres. The old abbot became ill with a fever upon reaching Chartres. Bishop Malard visited Laumer, who told him that he welcomed death. Not only was death the fate of all men, and the entrance into Heaven, but there would be terrible devastation in the north of France in the near future. Bishop Malard (halo, mitre) stands at left. He gestures toward Laumer and grasps his cloak. St. Laumer (halo) lies on a bed at the back. Above is a trilobed arch below a roof. Delaporte notes that the same scene, in reverse, is illustrated in a miniature in ms 500, f 41v.; South Nave Clerestory: The St. Laumer Window
