Description
Gothic; Virgin and Child Rose WindowDelaporte no. 157, Deremble-Manhes no. 129cNorth Nave ClerestoryThe Virgin and Child are in a pose sometimes called the “Throne of Wisdom.” The Virgin Mary sits frontally, holding the Christ Child on her lap. On Mary’s head is a large jewel-encrusted gold crown. Her head is surrounded by a halo with small white round objects (pearls?) around its edge. Under the crown, Mary wears a white veil that extends to her shoulders. Mary holds a flowering staff in one hand, her other hand is on the Christ child’s shoulder. The Christ Child (crowned, barefooted, halo with a cross) sits frontally on Mary’s lap. With one hand He makes a gesture of blessing. In the other he holds a closed book (appropriate for Christ as the incarnation of the Word) On either side of Mary’s head is a panel with the words VIRI;TVRONV DED ERVT:HAS IIIDelaporte believes this shows that this rose window and the two lancets under it (Delaporte no. 155, Deremble-Manhes no. 129a and Delaporte no. 156, Deremble-Manhes no. 129b) were the gifts of a confraternity in the city of Tours dedicated to St. MartinOn either side kneel donors facing and raising their hands toward the Virgin and Child (in prayer?) On the left is a man with a cap, on the right is a woman wearing fashionable 13th century clothing, including a chinstrap (barbette) and a flat, tart-shaped hat (torette). If Delaporte is correct about the donors, these figures represent a much larger group of people.Eight-lobed rose window, ca. 4 meters in diameter.Restored in 1872-3 by Coffetier; North Nave Clerestory Rose: The Virgin and Child Window
