Description
Gothic; The Rose Window in the North TranseptDelaporte no. 145, Deremble-Manhes no. 121This figure is the Old-Testament High Priest Melchisodech, who blessed Abraham and made an offering of bread and wine (foreshadowing the Eucharist) in Genesis 14: 17-20. He is bearded and crowned, and carries a chalice and a censer. There is an inscription MELCHISEDEC. Kidson, discussing the statue of Melchisodech of the central portal of the North Porch, says that the fact that Melchisodech is often shown wearing a papal tiara and the fact that he was a king as well as a priest , is an allusion to the contention of the medieval papacy that it had authority over secular rulers. (Kidson, p. 34); Rose Window in the North Transept
