Description
Gothic; St. Cosmas and St. Damian Deremble-Manhes no. 118B, Delaporte no. 99South Transept ClerestoryThe lowest panels show a tonsured cleric standing and raising his hands in prayer toward a table (altar?) on which is a large Greek cross. He wears clerical vestments (Delaporte lists alb, amice, chasuble, and dalmatic. He is identified by the inscription IEFOI (Geoffrey). Both the donor and the cross are framed by trilobed arches on carved capitals. Delaporte points out the similarities with the donor in the adjacent Gervaise and Protais window.Since both windows show pairs of martyred brothers, perhaps the donors of the windows are brothers as well.-JVAbove are two large standing figures of the brothers Cosmas and Damian. They were born in Arabia but settled in Asia Minor. They were noted for their piety and their skill at medicine. They were martyred under Diocletian ca 287. Both are haloed and hold books. The beardless figure at left is identified with the inscription S. COSMA. The bearded figure at right is identified with the inscription S. DAMIANVS.Above their heads are trilobed arches surmounted by trefoils- above is a stylized dome. Cosmas and Damian were particularly venerated in the Eastern Church- perhaps the dome refers to Byzantine Architecture. This may also be why the cross in the donor portrait is a Greek Cross. - JVRestored by M. Gaudin in 1920.; South Transept Clerestory: St. Cosmas and St. Damian Window
