Gothic; St. Denis and member of the Clément FamilyDeremble-Manhes no. 116B , Delaporte no. 102South Transept ClerestoryThe bottom panels contain a shield azure a cross recercelée argent, a bend gules overall, the arms of the prominent Metz family of Clément. On either side of the shield is a candle within stylized architecture. Above, in an architectural frame, are two standing figures. At left is St Denis (with halo, mitre, holding a book, identified by the inscription S. DIONISIVS) At left is an altar table. Denis is handing the oriflamme (a red banner kept at the abbey of St. Denis) to a knight whose surcoat bears the family arms. Delaporte identifies him as Jean Clément, marshal of France in 1225, d 1260 (Delaporte, p. 441). For a recent discussion of this window, see James Bugslag, Ideology and Iconography in Chartres Cathedral: Jean Clement and the Oriflamme, Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte, 61 Bd., H. 4. (1998), pp. 491-508. The author shows how this image reflects the political, social, and military milieu of the period.; South Transept Clerestory: St. Denis and member of the Clément Family
