Description
Gothic; The Ezekiel, David, Cherubim Window Deremble-Manhes no. 103, Delaporte no. 122Above the donor panel (butchers) are three elaborate frames arranged vertically, containing figures of the prophets Ezekiel, Daniel, and a top, a Cherubim.Panel 1: Donors- butchersAt bottom is a panel showing the donors-the butchers. In the background. Parallel to the picture plane, is a cow which is hobbled by a rope that connects its neck and front leg. Delaporte says its eyes are covered with a blindfold. In the foreground at left stands a butcher in a short tunic, raising an ax to kill the cow. In the background at right hangs a skinned carcass of an animal. Its head hands downward- its snout shows it is a pig.. At the extreme right, a dog (a greyhound?), its ears pricked up, sits and looks toward the scene at the center of the panel. Above is stylized architecture with walls and towers (a city?) Panel 2: EzekielThe lowest figure is identified by the inscription EZECHIEL. He is bearded, wears a “Jew’s cap,” but has no halo. One hand is on his lap, with the other, he makes an open-palmed gesture that Delaporte describes as “a gesture oracles use when they prophesize” He looks upwards and to the right. Panel 3: DavidThe middle of the three figures is that of King David – identified by the inscription REX DAVIT. He is bearded and crowned. He is seated; one hand is on his knee and the other holds a scepter.12.26 by 2.12 metersRestored in the 15th century and in 1920 by Lorin; North Choir Clerestory: The Ezekiel, David, Cherubim Window
