Description
Gothic; The Annunciation, Visitation, Virgin and Child Window Deremble-Manhes no. 100, Delaporte no. 120The lowest panel shows two men carrying a large basket a yoke slung on their shoulders. In it are large, round objects- pieces of bread ? Williams questions whether the bakers would have been prosperous enough to make such a donation (pp 41-2). She contends that bread is shown in this location because it had important economic, iconographic and liturgical meanings (pp 63-8).The second scene from the bottom shows the Annunciation to the Virgin (Luke 1:26-8). The angel (haloed, barefoot) stands at left. He holds a staff with flower-shaped finial. He raises his hand toward Mary, who (haloed) stands at right, holding a book. Above her, the Dove of the Holy Spirit descends. The third scene from the bottom shows the Visitation (Luke 1:39-56) Mary and her kinswoman Elizabeth (mother of John the Baptist) meet to rejoice in their pregnancies. Both have halos and carry books. One woman has her hands on the other’s shoulder and the gestures toward her.The top scene shows the Virgin and Child enthroned, a Throne of Wisdom type. Mary (haloed, crowned) sits facing the viewer, holding s rod with a flower-shaped finial. On her lap is the Christ Child (crossed halo) also facing the viewer. He holds a round object (orb ?) in one hand and with the other makes a gesture of blessing. 12.26 by 2.18 metersRestored in 1415, and in 1920 by Gaudin.
