Description
Gothic; The Noah WindowDelaporte no. 64, Deremble-Manhes no. 47Panel 24: Noah releases a bird (Genesis 8:6-7)The Ark (described in Genesis 6:14-16) floats on turbulent waves. Manhes-Deremble points out that medieval depiction of the Ark are usually an abstract in shape or like a boat or a church. The authors point out that this depiction is a compromise. It has a keel with a bow and stern, like a ship, but above it is an arcade, like a building. Above the arcade is a sloping roof- at the apex is a window. Noah’s hand releases a bird- either a dove (Genesis 8:8-12) or a raven (Genesis 8:6-7) which flies toward the right (panel 25). Note that there are differences in the details of the Ark in this panel compared with Panels 19 and 29.; The Noah Window
