Description
Gothic; The Lubin WindowDelaporte no. 63, Deremble-Manhes no. 45Manhes-Deremble points out that the narrative structure of this window is very complex. Four large round panels with red backgrounds are on the center axis (22 – Transport of wine, 23- the cellarer draws wine, 24- Celebration of the Mass, 25- Christ in Majesty). They are surrounded with a frame decorated with vines and grapes. They can be read as a synopsis of Lubin’s development from worker to monk to priest to saved soul. They can also be interpreted without any allusion to Lubin at all, as merely the story of wine at Chartres as it is produced, used, and finally elevated into a symbol for Christ’s blood. Surrounding these central images are depictions of specific episodes from Lubin’s life- all with blue backgrounds. As in many other windows at Chartres, there are donor panels are at the bottom of the window. However, this window is unusual because it has, along its edge, panels depicting men bringing cups of wine to the altar on St. Lubin’s feast days during which the life of St Lubin was read. This makes both them and we, the viewers, into both spectators and participants in a multi-layered complex that combines image, narrative and ritual. Williams points out that the structure of this narrative is quite different from that in the written Life of Lubin which has a short description of his youth, a somewhat longer version of his subsequent life, and a very long section on his miracles. However, this window has 4 panels showing his youth, 8 of his subsequent life, and only two of his miracles.; The St. Lubin Window
