Description
Gothic; The Passion Typological WindowDelaporte no. 59, Deremble-Manhes no. 37Panel 26: Samson carries the Gates of Gaza (Judges 16:1-3)The Jews sought to capture Samson by closing the gates of the city of Gaza while he was inside visiting Delilah. However, Samson tore down the gates and carried them to the top of a nearby mountain. In the Middle ages, Samson was thought to prefigure Christ, and Gaza the tomb in which the Jews sought to confine Christ. Samson’s breaking of the gates was thought to be a prefiguration of the Resurrection.Samson stands at right, carrying the gates of the city of Gaza. The gates are crossed. At left is an abstract landscape, which probably represents the mountains on which Samson deposited the gates. At Chartres, episodes from the life of Samson are on the archivolts of the right portal of the North Porch.; The Passion Typological Window
