Description
Gothic; The Passion Typological WindowDelaporte no. 59, Deremble-Manhes no. 37Panel 16: The Sign of Tau (Exodus 37:21-8)God told Moses that the Israelites should mark their doors with the blood of the lamb, so that they would be spared by the destroying angel that would kill the firstborn of every household in Egypt. Later there was a belief that that this blood was painted in the form of the letter Tau, which resembles a cross. Of course, the lamb is also a symbol of Christ whose blood is shed at the Crucifixion (See Manhes-Deremble p. 147 for further discussion of this panel). At left, a bearded man stands, painting the sign of Tau over a doorway. The man has a cloth tied around his head with an elaborate knot. He holds a small bowl in one hand, while with the other he uses a stick (of hyssop?) to paint the sign of the Tau on the lintel of a door (right). At bottom right, a bearded kneeling man uses a knife to cut the throat of a lamb. The blood of the lamb falls into a bowl on the ground.Above is the top of a crenellated wall with a gable above it.A similar scene is in the Moses window at Saint-Denis.; The Passion Typological Window
