Description
Gothic; The Passion Typological WindowDelaporte no. 59, Deremble-Manhes no. 37Panel 12: Ecclesia Ecclesia is the personification of the Church and the New Alliance brought by Christ. She is usually paired with Synagoga, the personification of the Synagogue and the Ancient Law (see panel 14). Manhes-Deremble notes that the text, Altercatio Ecclesiae et Synagogae, attributed to St. Augustine, was expounded on by Pope Innocent III in 1204. At Chartres, there were once statues of Ecclesia and Synagoga on the outer porch near the easternmost portal of the North Porch. Ecclesia, with a crown and halo, stands holding a processional cross with a banner in one hand and in the other a model of a church with a gable, arched windows and towers. To the left is abstract foliage.; The Passion Typological Window
