This is St. Sulpice, archbishop of Bourges (d. 646) who was noted for his success in reestablishing ecclesiastical discipline, for the relief of the poor and for the conversion of the Jews. At right stands a male saint with a halo wearing humble garments and carrying a shepherd’s crook. Behind him are several sheep and a dog. This is St. Mathurin de Laurchant (d 338), priest, hermit and confessor, who was thought to be responsible of the conversion of the district of Gatinois, which includes Sens. He is mentioned in several manuscripts at Chartres, including mss 588 II (13th century breviary), 511-6 (lectionary of the second half of the 14th century), 563 and 531 (breviaries of the end of the 14th century), 566-7 (breviaries from the 15th century), and 585 (book of hours of the end of the 15th century).Panel 08: Inscription and decorative (Lower left)The upper part of this panel contains the inscription S.[SUL]PICE. Lifart (haloed) stands at right, wearing a habit. In one hand, he carries a book, with the other holds the stake that impales the red dragon on the ground beneath his feet.
