Description
Gothic; The St. Anthony and St. Paul the Hermit WindowDelaporte no. 13, Deremble-Manhes no. 30bPanel 18: Anthony sees Paul’s soul taken to Heaven Panels 16-19 show scenes from St. Jerome’s life of St. Paul.At the far left is stylized foliage. Anthony (bearded, haloed) stands at left, carrying a staff and wearing a hooded mantle. Though his body faces toward the left, he turns his head to look to the right. He raises his hand (in surprise?). To the right, two angels carry the soul of Paul, shown as a small praying gold nude figure, in a red mandorla with a gold border. The angels (haloed, barefooted, yellow and green wings) look toward the right, their garments extend behind them, probably to indicate motion. One swings a censer. Sometimes the souls in the widows at Chartres look like the golden idols which are also depicted there. - JV; The Anthony Abbot and Paul the Hermit Window
