Description
Gothic; The St. Anthony and St. Paul the Hermit WindowDelaporte no. 13, Deremble-Manhes no. 30bPanel 8: Temptation of AnthonyThe Devil tempts Anthony in the form of a beautiful young woman, but he resists her by thinking about the flames of Hell. The scene tales place in an interior- a beam, walls and a roof are shown overhead. Anthony sits in front of a large chimney at left. There is a fire in the chimney with a pothook hanging above it. In the flames are long, white, pointed rod-shaped objects. Anthony, now bearded and haloed, sits at center, facing the fire. He wears a mantle with a hood pulled up over the back of his head. He looks toward the right, where a woman stands in front of an open door. Her long hair flows over her shoulders, and she wears a long green dress with a prominent belt. In her raised hand, she holds a small round mirror. The sticks in the fire may be an allusion to another version of this story (shown in a capital at Vezèlay) where Anthony throws himself into a thorn bush to thwart desire-JV; The Anthony Abbot and Paul the Hermit Window
