Description
Gothic; The St. Anthony and St. Paul the Hermit WindowDelaporte no. 13, Deremble-Manhes no. 30bDelaporte says that the feast of St. Paul the Hermit was no longer celebrated at Chartres in the 12th century. St. Anthony, though mentioned in the martyrology, was not commemorated until the 15th century. However, Delaporte contends that their entwined stories were well known in the Middle Ages because of the Life of St. Anthony written by St. Athanasius and the Life of St. Paul written by St. Jerome. He says that the window for the most part follows Athanasius' account, while panels 16-19 show scenes from St. Jerome’s Life of St. Paul.According to Manhes-Deremble, the story of St. Anthony was very popular with military elites. She cites the fact that the life of this saint was one of the earliest of the saint’s lives to be translated into French prose. Baudouin III, Count of Guines and d’Ardres supposedly could recite it from memory. There is also a depiction of St. Anthony in a clerestory window (Delaporte no. 89, Deremble-Manhes no. 126). In addition, several of the capitals at Vézelay and Autun show episodes from the lives of the hermits Paul and Anthony. Donors: The earliest commentators believed them to be the basket makers. Delaporte and Manhes-Deremble identify them as the fish-merchants. Location: First bay of the choir- North side. It shares the bay with the Belle Verrière window. That window shows the temptations of Christ and the wedding at Cana. Thus, both windows share the themes of temptation and of sharing meals.7.40 by 2.42 metersArmature- Three large circles divided into five panels each, alternating with registers containing two half-quatrefoils.
