Description
Gothic; Thomas the Apostle WindowDeremble-Manhes no. 23, Delaporte window no. 46It is appropriate that, in the great edifice of Chartres, a window is dedicated to St. Thomas who was thought to have been an architect. Delaporte notes that Chartres once had a relic of this saint; a hand (Lautier, 2003, 60-61). The major source for the legend of Thomas was the apocryphal gospel of that name. The Chartres lectionaries (the 10th century mss. 507 (f 374r) and the 12th century mss. 500 (f 12v)) contained the life of Thomas, but these did not contain the specific episodes shown in this window.8.97 by 2.2 metersThe Corpus Vitrearum sets the date of most of the panels in this window as between 1220-30, but proposes that panel 1 (Doubting Thomas examining Christ’s wounds) was added in 1240.Location: North aisle, second chapel from the axial chapel. Based on the mutilated state of the border and background, Manhes-Deremble suggests that this window was originally intended for the axial chapel, the chapel of the Apostles. (p. 59)Restored and panels reordered in 1923 by Lorin.; The Thomas the Apostle Window
