Description
Gothic; The St. Julian the Hospitaller WindowDelaporte no. 45, Deremble-Manhes no. 21Julian the Hospitaller (sometimes called Julian the Poor) was a fictional saint- there is no evidence that anyone like him existed. Delaporte points out that Saints Eustace and Christopher are also fictional saints. Cahier describes him as a “sort of Christian Oedipus”. The story of Julian’s life is not recorded in the early lectionaries or collections of saint’s lives. However, it does appear in the sermons of Antoninus of Florence, in the 13th-century work of Vincent of Beauvais and in the Golden Legend. Later a story in Gustave Flaubert’s Trois Contes was based on this legend. The depiction at Chartres is curious in that it does not contain an episode in the accounts of Julian’s life in which Julian is told by a stag that he is hunting that he will kill his parents. Upon hearing this, Julian abandons all he has and flees. There are also St. Julian the Hospitaller windows in Rouen and in Bourges.Donors: Woodworkers- carpenters, wheelwrights, coopers. It is not known if these trades were all practiced by separate groups of artisans, or whether the same worker made all these items of wood. Delaporte suggests that these workers were associated with Julian because he constructed an inn (see Panel 24) He also notes that the same group of workers is pictured in the Noah Window in the nave (Delaporte no. 64, Deremble-Manhes no. 47).8.83 by 2.14 metersLocation: Central of 3 windows in the second chapel from the east in the north aisle of the choir.Restored by Lorin in 1923; The Julian the Hospitaller Window
