Description
Gothic; The Chéron WindowDelaporte no. 42, Deremble-Manhes no. 15Panel 2: Donors- Sculptors carving statuesTwo groups of workers carve crowned statues positioned diagonally. Delaporte suggests the statues look like those above the south porch and those in the gallery of the west façade.Left half: Two sculptors carve a nearly-completed statue. Both wear short belted tunics; one has a cap with a chin strap (coif). The bareheaded man at left does not actively work, but appears to look on, his chin in his hand. He appears to be leaning on his mallet. A set-square hangs behind him. To the right is a shelf with a jug and a cup on it.Right half: Two workers carve a crowned statue like the one in the left half of the panel except that it is still relatively rough. Both wear a short belted tunic and a cap with a chinstrap (coif). The man to the left drinks from a cup as he leans on his mallet. The other man carves the stone with a mallet and chisel. Several of the men have work-gloves hanging from their belts. Delaporte points out that wine and gloves were given to workers in addition to their salaries. He notes that this panel is much restored.; The Chéron Window
