Gothic; The Sylvester WindowDelaporte no. 30, Deremble-Manhes no. 8.Panel 24: The Baptism of Constantine. Constantine is in a baptismal font at center (compare with bath in Panel 17). Constantine (naked, crowned) is identified by the inscription COSTANTINVS.To the left of the panel stand two clerics- the one in front holds a cloth. To the right of the panel stands Sylvester (halo, papal insignia*). Behind him is a tonsured cleric holding an object. (a book? Reliquary?).* A camelaucum – the white cone-shaped precursor of the mitre (Catholic Encyclopedia, “Mitre”) He carries a staff with a cross at the tip, which might be a “cross of jurisdiction” a type of processional cross “borne before [the Pope] wherever he may be” (Catholic Encyclopedia, “Processional Cross”); The St. Sylvester Window
