His opponent wears a coat of mail and a conical helmet and crown over the coif. He reaches towards Roland with one hand, the other holds his sword. Above is a cloud motif, a possible reference to the Milky Way (Maines).Most scholars identify the opponent as the giant Ferracutus (Ferragut), since he was only vulnerable through his navel. However, Vétault suggests that this is King Marsile because he wears a crown and because he is not noticeably taller than Roland. Maines suggests that the figure is a conflation of Ferracutus and King Marsile.Panels 8-21, depicting Charlemagne's Campaigns in Spain are based on the Historia Karoli Magni et Rotholandi, generally known as the Pseudo-Turpin because the text claims it was composed by Turpin, Archbishop of Reims, an eyewitness to the events narrated; see Meredith-Jones, Maines.; The Charlemagne Window
