Description
Gothic; The Charlemagne WindowDelaporte no. 38, Deremble-Manhes no. 7Panel 14: Miracle of the Flowering Lances at SahagunOn the night before the battle at Sahagun, the knights stood their lances upright. The lances of those who would be killed the following day bloomed with flowers. In the background are seven lances all sprouting with leaves. Five or more knights lie on the ground, one bareheaded, others wearing helmets, their swords and shields lie around them. Above is a cloud motif, a possible reference to the Milky Way (Maines). Various scholars have identified the bareheaded figures as Charlemagne, Roland, and/or Milo, Roland’s putative father (but cf. Panel 22).Panels 8-21, depicting Charlemagne's Campaigns in Spain are based on the Historia Karoli Magni et Rotholandi, generally known as the Pseudo-Turpin because the text claims it was composed by Turpin, Archbishop of Reims, an eyewitness to the events narrated; see Meredith-Jones, Maines.; The Charlemagne Window
