Description
Gothic; The Charlemagne WindowDelaporte no. 38, Deremble-Manhes no. 7Panel 11: Charlemagne prays Charlemagne (in chain mail, crowned, haloed, identified as CARROLVS) kneels (right), his horse and his soldiers behind him. Lejeune and Stiennon identify the figure carrying a banner behind Charlemagne’s horse as Roland, since he was Charlemagne’s standard-bearer. Delaporte and other scholars identify this scene as Charlemagne praying for victory in his attempt to conquer Pamplona. Above is a cloud motif, a possible reference to the Milky Way (Maines). Panels 8-21, depicting Charlemagne's Campaigns in Spain are based on the Historia Karoli Magni et Rotholandi, generally known as the Pseudo-Turpin because the text claims it was composed by Turpin, Archbishop of Reims, an eyewitness to the events narrated; see Meredith-Jones, Maines.; The Charlemagne Window
