Jamb Statue; Gothic; South Porch, Right PortalLeft JambsAmbrose (or Becket) and NicholasThis figure has usually been identified as St Ambrose, Bishop of Milan from 374-97. However, Clark Maines has argued that it is St. Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury. (See Maines, Becket, pp. 163-73.)The figure has a halo and wears the two pointed mite of an archbishop. He wears the vestments of an archbishop (alb, dalmatic, tunicle, chasuble, amice, stole, maniple, pallium and gloves). In his left hand is a fragment of a staff.Nicholas one of the most popular saints on the middle ages. Little is known about his life, other than that he was the bishop of the city of Myra in Asia Minor, and that he died in died either 345 or 352 A.D. However, his legend was soon embellished with a number of miracles. Two of them are depicted in the adjacent tympanum. The figure has a halo and wears a two pointed mitre. He wears the vestments of an archbishop (alb, dalmatic, tunicle, chasuble, amice, stole, maniple,and gloves). In his left hand is a fragment of a staff.; South Porch, Right Portal, Left Jambs
