Description
Jamb Statues; Gothic; North Porch, Right Portal, Left JambsStanding figures of Balaam, (left) whose socle shows his ass (Numbers 22: 21-34), the Queen of Sheba (center), whose socle shows a black man, and King Solomon (right), whose socle shows a man in a hood. For the meeting of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, see 3 Kings 10:1-10. There is some speculation that the figure of Solomon was originally carved as a female figure and meant for some other location. See Kidson, p. 50 for a discussion of the role of Solomon and Sheba in medieval theology.; North Porch, Right Portal
