Description
Tympanum; Gothic; North Porch, right portalJob on the dung heap (Job 2:6-16)Job was a pious man to whom Satan sends a series of misfortunes to test his faith in God. In one of them, Job's skin is covered with sores and he lies on a dung heap. John James points out that Pierre de Roissy, who was chancellor of Chartres between 1208 and 1213, wrote a commentary on the book of Job. Scholars have noted that the iconography on this portal probably served as a refutation of a number of heresies that were current at the time the portal was constructed. (Katzenellenbogen pp 76-8 and N. Levis-Godechot pp 31-47).Job, (bearded, naked except for a loincloth) lies on the dung heap at center. He scrapes his skin with a potsherd (Job 2:8). To the left are his three friends, Eliphaz, Baldad, and Sophar, who have come to console him. (Williamson says they should be interpreted as a Jew, a Moslem and a Heretic). Behind Job is Satan, whose talon-like hands rest on Job's head and feet. Satan has an animal-like snout and a protruding tongue. He looks upward. At right sits Job's wife her hands raised toward Job. In the background are stylized trees. Above this scene is a level of clouds- above which appears God (crossed halo, holding a scroll and an unidentified object) between two angels. The inner archivolt contains angels standing on clouds. The lowest ones visible in this image hold torches. Above are a pair of angels holding a sword (left) and a shield (right). The pair of angels at the top (only partially visible) hold crowns.; North Porch, Right Portal
