Description
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) designed and built a mechanical arithmetic machine, first shown off to the Royal Society during a tour of London in 1673. He also designed, but never built a ciphering/deciphering machine on similar mechanical principles. Nicholas Rescher, following the example of the arithmetic machine and other descriptions in Leibniz’s papers, constructed a working prototype of Leibniz’s proposed device. This book provides a historical introduction to Leibniz’s interest in the subject and also the basic logical and mechanical principles that went into the final design.
