  • The Archives of Scientific Philosophy (ASP) started in the mid-1970s with the acquisition of Rudolf Carnap’s papers. To these were soon added those of Hans Reichenbach and Frank P. Ramsey. The philosophers mentioned embody a philosophical movement known as Scientific Philosophy, historically including the traditions of Logical Positivism and Logical Empiricism. Many past faculty members in the Department of Philosophy at Pitt were students of some of the progenitors of this movement and are now included in the collection. To further stimulate research and publication, Archives & Special Collections in the University of Pittsburgh Library System has committed itself to assembling archival resources for investigating the history of Scientific Philosophy. All of these materials are accessible at the archives reading room in the Archives Service Center.

Butts, Rudolf Carnap, Herbert Feigl, Bruno de Finetti, Carl Gustav Hempel, Paul Hertz, David Hull, Richard C. Jeffrey, Isaac Levi, Elisabeth Lloyd, Frank P. Ramsey, Rose Rand, Hans Reichenbach, Jay Rosenberg, Wesley C. Salmon, Wilfrid Sellars, and Abner Shimony. We also have microfilm collections Kurt Gödel, Charles Sanders Peirce, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and the Archive for the History of Quantum Physics. New collections are being added regularly.
