Description
Dr. Leroy Patrick discusses geographical and demographical boundaries of Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh neighborhoods, particularly Homewood, discussing the racial makeup and the impact of real estate practices on segregation. Dr. Patrick points out the role of realtors in maintaining racial segregation by manipulating housing options for Black individuals, often discouraging them from certain areas. He also mentions the involvement of some religious leaders in attempts to keep certain neighborhoods predominantly White. Patrick also talks about political involvement within the Black community. Dr. Patrick talks about his engagement in political committees aiming to promote Black candidates and secure positions of importance within the government. He emphasizes the struggle for representation and influence within the Democratic Party, highlighting efforts to secure positions in state government for Black individuals, particularly in Allegheny County. Additionally, he addresses challenges faced by Black candidates in local elections, where despite efforts to consolidate support for a few candidates, the outcome didn't result in significant political success for the Black community in Pittsburgh.
