Description
William Wallace joined the Chemistry Department at the University of Pittsburgh in 1945 after earning his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Pitt in 1941 and working on the Manhattan Project during World War II. He served as chair of the department from 1963 to 1977, overseeing the department's move to the new chemistry building (Chevron Science Center). He was named a distinguished service professor in 1977 and in 1983 he retired from Pitt and joined the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University. Wallace's research focused on intermetallic chemistry.
