Description
Gothic; Dormition, Assumption, and Coronation of the VirginDeremble-Manhes no. 127B, Delaporte no. 153North Transept ClerestoryPanel 2: Death of the VirginIn the foreground, Mary (haloed, her hands crossed on her upper chest) lies on a bed that is parallel to the plane of the panel. Behind her gather several haloed men, probably apostles. At center is Christ (crossed halo) who holds Mary’s soul (like others at Chartres, a small, nude figure with a halo) Panel 3: Assumption of the VirginMary (haloed) stands at center in a red mandorla. She holds a long object that Delaporte describes this as a palm. Caviness suggests it was the palm given to her by an angel to announce her death as described in the Apocryphal Passing of Mary. The mandorla is supported on each side by an angel (haloed, barefooted. Multicolored wings).Panel 4: Coronation of the VirginAt left, Mary (haloed, barefooted) sits on a wide throne. She gestures toward (center right) who is placing a crown on her head.; North Transept Clerestory:Death, Ascension, and Coronation of the Virgin
