Description
Gothic; The Rose Window in the North TranseptDelaporte no. 145, Deremble-Manhes no. 121General ViewThe theme of this window is the Virgin Mary, a subject also found in the sculpture of the adjacent North Porch. The rose itself has a seated Virgin and Child at center. The center is surrounded twelve circular panels depicting four doves with halos (the gifts of the Holy Spirit) and angels with censers and candlesticks. Beyond is a circle of diamond-shaped panels showing seated, crowned figures. According to Delaporte, they are the kings of Judea in chronological order (Delaporte, p 497). The outermost circle shows standing figures of prophets, wearing "Jews Caps" and holding scrolls. In small panels are the arms of the royal houses of France and Castille azur semé of fleurs de lis or (gold fleur-de-lis on a blue background) and gules a castle or (a gold castle on a red background), indicating tha this window was donated by King Louis VIII and Queen Blanche of Castile. Flanking the rose are small lancets with the arms of France and Castille.Compare the iconography with that of a 'Jesse Tree".Below are five lancet windows with large standing figures at the top and smaller panes at the bottom. The central one (Lancet D) shows St. Anne (Anna) holding the Infant Mary standing on a panel showing the arms of France. The other four lancets show Old Testament figures (B: Melchizedek standing over Nebuchadnezzar, C: David over Saul, E:Solomon over Jeroboam, and F: Aaron over Pharaoh).
