Description
Gothic; The Passion WindowDelaporte no. 3, Deremble-Manhes no. 51Panel 9-The Entombment of Christ (Matthew 27:53-61; Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23:50-55; John 19:38-42)Four men prepare the body of Christ for burial while the Virgin Mary and St. John look on.A sarcophagus is at the bottom of the composition, parallel with the plane of the panel. It is supported by four columns with crocket capitals and has arched openings on its sides. At the far left and right men are lowering the body of Christ into the tomb. The body has no halo, the eyes are closed and the arms are crossed. The body is on a large cloth- the men have the ends of it knotted around their shoulders while they use their hands to guide the edges to the cloth- they do not touch the body. The man at the far left (Joseph of Arimathea) has long hair and a beard- the one at the far right wears a cap (Nicodemus). Between them stand two more bearded men wearing caps (one pointed). The man at right adjusts the cloth around the lower part of Christ’s body. The man at left pours a liquid from a round flask onto the body. In a similar scene in the west facade capital frieze, Heimann says that the combination of anointing with the Entombment is new to the west and that this iconography indicates Byzantine influence. (Heimann, p. 87)At the top are two haloed figures (the faces of both are probably restored): the Virgin Mary (left), holding her hand to her face and raising the other; her veil has a Greek Cross motif at the centre of the brow . The other figure, beardless, raising a hand, is St. John.; The Passion of Christ Window
