Description
Gothic; The John the Evangelist WindowDelaporte no. 4, Deremble-Manhes no. 48Panel 16 John in his SarcophagusSeveral of the Lives of John state that Christ appeared to John before his death and told him he would die the next Sunday. On that day, John preached and said mass, then bade his followers dig a pit or sepulcher. John then lay down on it. The sepulcher was bathed in light. Medieval sources differ as to what was found in the tomb later. The sepulcher, supported by columns with capitals and decorated with quatrefoils, is at center, parallel to the plane of the panel. Its lid is behind it. John (haloed) sits in it, raising his hands (in prayer?). John is surrounded by 4 rays of red light that emanate from a circle at the top of the panel. One either side of the sarcophagus are abstract architectural elements.See panel 15 for the first scene of this episode.; The St. John the Evangelist Window
