Description
Gothic; Life of Nicholas WindowDelaporte no. 60, Deremble-Manhes no. 39Panel 18: Men carrying sacksTwo men carry large, full sacks on their shoulders. They are facing toward panel 18 at left. One of them is bearded and both have swords in scabbards hanging from their belts. Both wear tunics, hiked up so they do not get wet. Beneath their feet is an abstract shape that might be ocean water. Most scholars think that these are the men shown in Panel 18 and that they form an episode in the miracle in which Nicholas persuades men in ships to give food to the inhabitants of Myra who are suffering from a famine, a continuation of the miracle in panels 15 and 16. The sailors protest that they cannot, since their cargos, which belong to the Emperor in Alexandria, have already been weighed. They would be punished if they arrived in port with less than that amount. Nicholas persuades them to give up some grain, but when they arrive in Alexandria they still have the same amount that they started out with.; The St. Nicholas Window—Life
