Description
Gothic; Life of the Virgin WindowDelaporte no. 16, Deremble-Manhes no. 28bPanel 11: The Virgin Mary(?) at schoolA bearded figure is seated at left holding an object that Delaporte describes as a bundle of sticks. At right sit a group of five children- the Mary (haloed) is in front bending over a book(?) One of the students behind her holds a book toward the teacherIn the apocryphal gospels, Mary is presented to the Temple to be educated. However, both Delaporte and Deremble-Manhes seem to think that this panel shows a school rather than the Temple. Manhes-Deremble points out that panel, along with many others that show classroom scenes, testifies that education was highly valued at Chartres, which was one of the most significant seats of learning in Europe at this time.See Class in session : Images of readers at Chartres Cathedral / by Julia Wozniak, a Master's thesis produced at the University of Pittsburgh in 2006.; The Life of the Virgin Window
