Description
Gothic; The Sylvester WindowDelaporte no. 30, Deremble-Manhes no. 8.Panel 31: The funeral of Sylvester. Sylvester (halo, Papal insignia*) lies in his coffin in the foreground. His casket is elaborate and stands on thin pillars with capitals. Candles are burning at the head and foot of the coffin. Sylvester’s arms are crossed over his chest. In the background are four figures. To the left of the panel stand two clerics (singers?) -the one in the front holds an open book. In the center is a bishop. According to Deremble-Manhes , he is sprinkling the body with water from a bucket held by a cleric at right. This cleric also holds a staff with a small cross on its end. (perhaps Sylvester’s “cross of Justification”**) * A camelaucum – the white cone-shaped precursor of the mitre (Catholic Encyclopedia, “Mitre”) ** a type of processional cross “borne before [the Pope] wherever he may be” (Catholic Encyclopedia, “Processional Cross”); The St. Sylvester Window
