Description
Gothic; The Charlemagne WindowDelaporte no. 38, Deremble-Manhes no. 7Panel 22: Mass of St. GillesCharlemagne, crowned and haloed, sits enthroned (left), his legs crossed, resting his head on one hand (in dejection ?), the other on his knees. In the center stands a male figure who holds a book (a deacon ?). To the right, St. Giles (bearded, tonsured, haloed), celebrates mass at an altar and receives a scroll from an angel (upper right).According to the Life of St. Giles, Charlemagne had a sin too terrible to confess-- that he had committed incest with his sister, resulting in the conception of Roland. At the mass celebrated by St. Giles, a scroll was brought from heaven by an angel on which the sin was written. Through the intercession of the saint the words were miraculously erased and the sin was remitted. The textual source for scene 22 is the Life of St. Giles, either in Latin or French (see Jones and de Gaiffier). In Lassus' engraving it is shown at Panel 16; there is debate as to which position was the original one. In either case, the point of including the scene must have been to show that the Battle of Roncevaux and Roland's death were in expiation of Charlemagne's sin.; The Charlemagne Window
