Description
Gothic; The Charlemagne WindowDelaporte no. 38, Deremble-Manhes no. 7Panel 18: Charlemagne and his entourage leave SpainCharlemagne (center, crowned and haloed), accompanied by four unarmed horsemen, ride past mountains and trees. On Charlemagne's left is a bearded figure in a skullcap whom Lejeune and Stiennon identify as Turpin (though the figure wearing a mitre in panel 10, who also is generally identified as Turpin, does not have a beard). On Charlemagne's right is a figure generally thought to be the traitor Ganelon. Above is a cloud motif, a possible reference to the Milky Way (Maines).Panels 8-21, depicting Charlemagne's Campaigns in Spain are based on the Historia Karoli Magni et Rotholandi, generally known as the Pseudo-Turpin because the text claims it was composed by Turpin, Archbishop of Reims, an eyewitness to the events narrated; see Meredith-Jones, Maines.; The Charlemagne Window
