Description
Gothic; The Charlemagne WindowDelaporte no. 38, Deremble-Manhes no. 7Panel 6: Constantine presents relics to CharlemagneBoth are crowned, Charlemagne is identified as CAROLVS. They stand at an altar with three columns and capitals, on which are three house-shaped reliquary shrines, two gold, the one in the middle silver (white). There is a green cloth over the reliquaries and a hanging lamp above. Most scholars think this shows Constantine is offering relics to Charlemagne; Maines suggests this is the moment when, after Constantine offers rich rewards, Charlemagne refuses them, taking only the relics. This shifts the emphasis from Constantine to Charlemagne and altars the subtext of the narrative.JV suggests this scene may also allude to the taking of Constantinople in the Fourth Crusade in 1204, the time when Chartres acquired the relics of St. Anne.Panels 2-7, depicting Charlemagne's Crusade to Jerusalem are most likely based on Descriptio quilter Karolus Magnus clavum et coronam Domini a Constantinopoli Asquisgrani detulerit (see Maines).; The Charlemagne Window
