Pillar- bas-relief; Gothic; South Porch- Left Pillar of Left PortalEast Face-Martyrdoms6. Chéron carrying his head (?)At left is a small, open structure (a well viewed from the top?) At center, facing this structure , is a figure of a saint, holding his haloed head in his hands. At right is a figure whose head and arm have been broken off. However, there is an outline in the background that may be a raised sword, The figure is carrying a small sack (a money bag/Chéron was a local saint. A fifth-century Roman evangelizer, he was killed by robbers near Chartres. After his death, he picked up his head and walked to a site where a church was built for him. Some accounts say he threw his head down a sacred well.The tenth-century lectionary of Chartres (ms. 507 f. 155v) contains his life and miracles preceded by a prologue, and the twelfth-century lectionary (ms. 501 f. 79) has the prologue and the life but not the miracles. Another twelfth-century lectionary (ms. 500 folio 86v) contains only the passion of the saint.There is a window in the choir dedicated to him (Delaporte no. 42, Deremble-Manhes no. 15); South Porch, Left Portal, Left Pillar
