Jamb Figure; Gothic; South Porch, Left Portal (Portal of the Martyrs), Left Jambs : Military Saint, Stephen, Clement, LawrenceThe figure at left is a beardless, haloed young man in chain mail, holding a spear. He has a halo. This statue has traditionally been identified as Saint Theodore, but several other identifications have also been proposed; Delaporte believed it to be St. Maurice, Lejeune and Stiennon proposed that it is Roland, Bugslag has suggested that it is St. Eustace. The next figure is St. Stephen, episodes from whose life are on the adjacent tympanum. He is a beardless, haloed young man holding a book. He is dressed in the vestments of a deacon (amice and dalmatic).Pope Clement I (reigned 88-101 AD) was martyred during the persecution of Trajan. He is depicted as a bearded, haloed man wearing papal vestments. He wears the papal tiara and carries a staff. His hand is raised in a gesture of blessing(?)Lawrence was a deacon of the Church of Rome who was martyred in 258 AD by the order of the emperor Valerian. Lawrence is shown here as a haloed, beardless young man holding a book. He is dressed in the vestments of a deacon (amice and dalmatic).; South Porch, Left Portal (Portal of the Martyrs)
