Description
Pontifical; Gothic; Feast of the Nativity (25 December) : CollectPrayer: penflourished initial SCollect: historiated initial C, Nativity of Christ (Luke 2:1-7, Matthew 1:25)In the foreground, Mary (red halo) lies in bed, her head on the right, Joseph in Phrygian cap sits holding a tau staff on the left; above is the swaddled Child with ox and ass, in a manger on columns with a hanging lamp beneath. The ox and ass are probably a reference to Old Testament verses thought to be prophecies of the coming of the Messiah. Isaiah 1:3 says, "The ox knows his owner and the ass his maker's crib." There is a similar verse in Habakkuk. The apocryphal Protevangelium of James mentions only the ass. The Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew also says that an ox and an ass worshiped the Christ Child in the manger. At Chartres, the Infancy of Christ is also found on the right door of the west facade, in the middle lancet of the west façade, on the west façade frieze (all c. 1145); on the tympanum of the right portal on the north façade (c. 1205), and in the Life of the Virgin window c. 1220 (Delaporte no. 16, Deremble-Manhes no. 28b). Other Infancy of Christ scenes are in the clerestory.; Pontifical of Chartres, Orléans BM 144
