Description
Gregorian transcription from Merlet and Clerval (see citation below) of the chant for the Office of St. Giles from the Martyrology and Obituary of Chartres, Chartres, BM, MS n.a. 4. This transcription retains the text order of the original in the manuscript; for a liturgical order based on a manuscript with a similar Office from the Bibliotèque Sainte-Geneviève de Paris, see pp. 200-203 of Merlet and Clerval (op. cit.).Matins concludes with the latter half of the ninth Respond, finishing the word “pul - mentaria.” Lauds begins with the first four of the five Antiphons, each followed in the Gregorian notation by an abbreviated psalm title (these are not specified in the manuscript or its facsimile). The psalm designation for the fourth Antiphon is on the following page (see image FCMNA4TG009).To view the complete music for Lauds in the manuscript, see FCMNA4F098R and reproduced in facsimile in Merlet and Clerval, see image FCMNA4F098S.The musical structure for the Office of St. Giles is comprised of First Vespers, Matins, Lauds, and Second Vespers. For First and Second Vespers, this manuscript provides only the Antiphons for the Magnificat. The principal components for Matins, consisting of the Invitatory and three Nocturns, each with three Antiphons following the psalms, and three Responds following the lessons, are complete. Lauds is complete with five Antiphons for the psalms and an Antiphon for the Benedictus.Merlet, René and A. Clerval.
