These collections document heavy industry in Pittsburgh and the surrounding Western Pennsylvania region, as well as the people and ancillary services, businesses, and organizations that supported it.

Images visually document a wide range of topics relating to the history of Pittsburgh including neighborhoods, infrastructure, and landscape selected from the AIS vertical files.

CONSOL Energy, Inc. Mine Maps and Records

Visual images from the 1930s-1940s depict the Consolidation Coal Company (the forerunner of CONSOL Energy Inc.) and its operations, including miners at work, mine construction, interiors of shafts, mine cars, barges carrying coal, and railroad cars filled with coal. Also includes hand-drawn above-ground maps and annual reports.

William J. Gaughan Collection

Visual images from the 1880s-1970s show the Homestead Steel Works plant and community activities, machinery, workers, strikes, safety and accident concerns, and social activities; also include images of World War II production, morale campaigns in the mill, and female employees during the war.

Department of Public Health Annual Reports, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

A Bureau/Department of Public Health existed for the City of Pittsburgh beginning in 1852 through sometime in the mid-twentieth century. The Bureau/Department was charged with maintaining hospital/vaccination records, vital statistics, sanitation inspection, regulation, and enforcement, as well as food inspection. Records included here consist of 28 volumes of Annual reports from the Bureau of Public Health for the years 1871-1907 (not inclusive), and the reports from the Department of Public Health for the years 1909-1916 (inclusive).

Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad Company Records

Visual images from the 1880s-1970s show various branch lines controlled by the New York Central and then by Penn Central as well as many non-railroad activities and scenes in urban and rural areas of Western Pennsylvania's Allegheny, Beaver, Fayette, Lawrence, and Washington counties and some of the bordering counties of West Virginia and Ohio.
