Biography

Natalie Levin Maines Petesch was a prolific author of primarily short fiction who was born to Polish-Russian immigrants in Detroit, Michigan, in 1924. Her mother died illiterate at the age of 35, an event that would shape Petesch's life as an author. As a young woman, she completed three novels, all of which remain unpublished to this day, before beginning work on her undergraduate degree. She earned a B.A. from Boston University, an M.A. in creative writing from Brandeis University, and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Texas at Austin, where she also met her second husband, author Donald Petesch. The two moved to Pittsburgh during the 1960s, and it was there that Petesch began in earnest her career as a fiction author.

After the publication of several short stories in periodicals beginning in 1964, a feminist press released her first novel, The Odyssey of Katinou Kalokovich, in 1974. That same year she received the Iowa Short Fiction Award for her collection  After the First Death There is No Other. Petesch would go on to publish two more novels and six more short story collections, in addition to maintaining a presence in a number of prestigous literary magazines throughout the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. The 1996 collection  The Immigrant Train and Other Stories was inspired by Petesch's upbringing as well as her observations of the Polish-American community in Pittsburgh.

Scope and Content Notes

The items in this collection document Natalie Petesch's life as an author, with emphasis on her writing career and status as a public figure in the Pittsburgh community. Approximately half of the collection consists of drafts, manuscripts, notes, and research materials that supported her writing process and that document the development of various projects. The Manuscripts and Related Materials series and the Notebooks series both serve this function, though their formats are distinctive. Other series document Petesch's role in public life (including cassette tapes, found in Series VII. Multimedia, that record public readings and interviews); her higher education in the field of literature; and the publication of her short stories in various serials and anthologies. Though much of her writing was highly personal, less of the collection's emphasis is placed on Petesch's private life. The majority of this material can be found in the Correspondence series in the form of letters she wrote to family and friends. This series may also overlap with other areas of the collection, as in the case of correspondence with publishers, which can also be found in Series I and IV, and copies of manuscripts and story ideas exchanged with friends.

At the time of processing, some large chunks were relocated within the collection to reside alongside related material. Petesch's own file groupings and titles have been retained wherever possible. Further information about arrangement can be found at the series level. Overall, this collection provides a unique, detailed glimpse into the writing process and web of relationships that inspired a member of the Pittsburgh community to make significant contributions to the local arts and letters.

Collection Inventory

Series  I. Manuscripts and Related Materials, 1940-2005

Scope and Content Notes

This series, which comprises the bulk of the collection, documents Petesch's writing process and the development of both her projects and her authorial identity. Documentation ranges from extensive research materials used for her novels and story collections, to the 1964 typescript of the first short story she ever published. There are also drafts and manuscripts from an abundance of unpublished works, including the three novels she wrote during the 1940s and 1950s.

The first three subseries are dedicated to her three most recently published story collections because the documentation surrounding these works, particularly the research and drafting processes, is particularly extensive. Works whose inception was less thoroughly documented are grouped into subseries of long-form works, i.e. novels and story collections, and shorter works such as stories and essays. These latter subseries are arranged alphabetically by work. In the case of longer short story collections, drafts and notes pertaining to constituent stories are grouped together alongside materials related to the work as a whole.

Materials likely to be found in all of these subseries include what Petesch referred to as "fowle papers"--groupings of miscellaneous notes, ideas, outlines, research materials, and fragmented drafts created in the early stages of authorship. More organized research materials, including notes, annotated photocopies of source materials, correspondence with other authors and research institutions, and maps and brochures from research trips are also present along with many typescript drafts and revision notes. It is possible that manuscript versions may be duplicated; Petesch described copies of her works variously as "perfect," "original," "complete," or "final," and only detailed comparison would reveal whether each copy is unique.

Series  II. Notebooks, 1964-1986

Scope and Content Notes

The notebooks in this series are mostly spiral-bound stenographic notebooks that Petesch used for a variety of purposes throughout her writing life. Many are numbered, and it appears that she carried these in her daily life to write down miscellaneous thoughts and inspirations. Though the sequencing is inconsistent, an effort has been made to arrange these notebooks in chronological order. Petesch dedicated other volumes to brainstorming or research for a particular project, or brought them on trips to record her observations. Many of the notebooks served a dual function as scrapbooks, where Petesch curated newspaper clippings relevant to a topic or time in her life. In these materials researchers can expect to find a unique snapshot of the author's mind at work as she moved through the world with the eyes of a writer.

Series  III. Correspondence, 1947-2006

Scope and Content Notes

Petesch corresponded with a wide variety of friends and family, as well as publishers, agents, and fellow authors, especially from the 1970s through the 1990s when her career was at its most prolific. The items in this series mainly consist of copies of Petesch's outgoing letters, which she retained for her files. Of particular note is her extensive correspondence with her daughter, Rachel Maines, beginning around the time of her divorce in 1960 and continuing up until the donation of the collection in 2006. Petesch also correspondend significantly with friend and author David Ray.

Upon the donation of the collection, much of the correspondence, particularly with friends and family, was in miscellaneous files with approximate and overlapping date ranges; due to the volume of these materials, this arrangement has been maintained. Correspondence that was significant enough for Petesch to designate by specific correspondent in her files appears in Subseries 1. and 2., arranged alphabetically where possible. The more miscellaneous materials appear in Subseries 3. Miscellaneous and Subject-Based Correspondence.

Series  IV. Publicity, Grant and Employment Applications, 1950-1999

Scope and Content Notes

The material in this series documents many aspects of Petesch's public life as an author. This includes media coverage of her work; documentation from public events and organizations in which she participated; interactions with agents and publishers, including correspondence and promotional materials prepared for her publications; grants and scholarships for which she applied; and honors she received throughout her writing career. Of particular note are the materials relating to the University of Iowa Short Fiction Award she received in 1974 and the numerous press clippings and interviews done for Pittsburgh media outlets, especially WQED public radio. Document types include clippings, correspondence, notes, published promotional material, text of lectures and speeches, and application material for grants and awards.

The internal arrangement of this series remains largely unchanged from the time of donation. It therefore reflects Petesch's own, somewhat miscellaneous filing system. Confidental letters of recommendation and application materials bearing social security numbers have been removed due to privacy concerns. Scope and Content Notes

Natalie L.M. Petesch was educated at Detroit public schools. She ran away from home to attend Wayne State University after graduating form high school, but did not complete her bachelor's degree until approxmiately a decade later at Boston University. She went on to earn a master's degree from Brandeis University and a PhD in English literature from the University of Texas at Austin, after which she taught literature at the university level before dedicating herself full-time to her career as an author. This series contains papers, handouts, and lecture notes from Petesch's time as both a student and an instructor at a variety of institutions.

Series  VI. Offprints and Clippings of Petesch's Writings, 1964-1998

Scope and Content Notes

Beginning in 1964 and continuing through the 1990s, Petesch regularly published short stories and excerpts from her longer works in newspapers, magazines, and respected literary journals. Though many of these works were eventually culled into collection volumes, the collection of offprints that Petesch maintained documents the evolution of her publishing career and preserves the original publication context for many of her works. Many of her early publications in the 1960s and 1970s were in independent feminist journals. Periodicals in which she was published numerous times include Kansas Quarterly,  New Letters, the  New Orleans Review, and the  University of Windsor Review. This series contains Petesch's personal copies of over sixty periodicals containing her work, arranged chronologically, with duplicates removed.

Series  VII. Multimedia, 1955-1998

Scope and Content Notes

The multimedia items in this series largely consist of sound recordings of Petesch reading her short stories and occasionally excerpts from her longer works. Some are tapings of public presentations, including radio broadcasts, while others are practice recordings she made privately in preparation for a speech or reading. The fact that she made these practice recordings gives a unique insight into Petesch's approach toward her public life as an author. Most are on audiocassette tapes, with one five-inch magnetic tape reel included among them.

One box in this series contains microfilm reels that Petesch had made in order to preserve copies of writings she produced during the 1950s. These include papers she wrote for her master's degree at Brandeis University and one of her unpublished novels, though the label indicates that she herself was unsure of the content of this last reel.

The final item in this series is a small box of lead ore that Petesch brought back as a souvenir from Kellogg, Idaho when she was researching her novel Duncan's Colony. This unique piece of realia is housed in its own box in order to protect the rest of the collection from particulate damage.
