Biography

Robert C. Alberts, a writer, biographer, and expert in U.S. history, was born in Pittsburgh in 1907. He received both an AB and MA from the University of Pittsburgh in 1930 and 1931, respectively. Before he became a professional writer, Alberts was the vice president of the public relations firm Ketchum, MacLeod & Grove, Inc. He took an early retirement and then wrote over ten books in a span of twenty years including Pitt: The Story of the University Pittsburgh 1787-1987, a pivitol work documenting the bicentennial history.

Mr. Alberts was a student of 18th century American history and chose as his firsts subject a daring colonist who played a role in the British capture of Quebec during the French and Indian War. The book, The Most Extraordinary Adventures of Major Robert Stobo (1965), was hailed as an exciting true-life tale. His other books included  The Golden Voyage: The Life and Times of William Bingham (1970), the story of a wealthy Philadelphia merchant who played a prominent role in the Revolutionary War;  The Good Provider: H.H. Heinz and His 57 Varieties (1973), about the founder of the company that bears his name, and  Benjamin West: A Biography (1978), a highly regarded portrait of the first American painter to gain international recognition. Alberts passed away on October 8, 1996; he was 89 years old.
