Biography

In a 1959 New York Times profile of Erroll Garner by John S. Wilson, he notes that Garner never made any kind of plan until the last minute, never used a recipe to cook and taught himself to play golf.

Therefore, it is not surprising that while Garner couldn't read or write music, he composed "Misty", one of the greatest jazz ballads of all time. Or that he played thousands of songs entirely by ear, and never the same way twice, the epitome of great jazz improvisation and interpretation. "Erroll never said what he was going to play or what key, just started playing the intro," said bassist Ernest McCarty, who played with Garner in the early 1970's. "He was unpredictable and I liked that."

On June 15, 1921 Garner was born in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, Pa. Garner followed his older brother Linton, playing piano by three and quickly becoming accomplished at picking up tunes. At six he began taking lessons. Just a year later, Garner began to play regularly on Pittsburgh's KDKA radio station with a group called The Candy Kids, and by the age of eleven he was playing on Allegheny riverboats.

Listening to early ragtime style 78 records, Garner developed his innovative style illustrated by steady left hand guitar style chord rhythms supporting loose, right-hand melodic interpretations and harmonic invention, a bit of Scott Joplin meeting Liberace, with a heaping dose of delight. "Humor is intrinsic to Garner's nature and is a companion to his feeling for life, to the joy and sensuality of his playing," said the late comedian and pianist Dudley Moore in a 1988 tribute.

In 1939 Garner traveled to New York City as an accompanist for night club singer Ann Lewis, and subbed in for Art Tatum in Tatum's trio with guitarist "Tiny" Grimes and bassist "Slam" Stewart. He played at the Melody Bar, Rendezvous, Three Deuces and at Jimmy's Chicken Shack. In 1947, while playing in Los Angeles in his own trio of Red Callendar and Doc Wes, Garner met and recorded the hit Cool Blues with legendary saxophonist Charlie Parker. Garner continued his success as a prolific composer and recording artist, releasing his romantic version of "Laura" in 1946, which sold a half million copies, followed by the recordings Cocktail Time in 1947 and The Elf in 1949.

An appearance on the Tonight Show, then hosted by fellow jazz pianist and composer Steve Allen, led to many more television requests. From the 1950's-1970's Garner appeared, often multiple times, on the Jackie Gleason show, Perry Como's Kraft Music Hall, the Ed Sullivan show, the Garry Moore show, London Palladium show, the Andy Williams show, the Joey Bishop show, the Flip Wilson show, the Pearl Bailey show, the Mike Douglas show, the David Frost show and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

By the early 1950's Garner was one of the country's most popular entertainers. Fortuitously, at this time he met Martha Glaser, who had originally planned to pursue a career in public affairs and journalism. However, following the 1943 Detroit riots, she became increasingly active in supporting human rights, taking a central role in the formation the Entertainment Committee to combat race hatred. The first Jewish American woman to be hired by the city of Chicago for the Human Rights commission, she organized jazz concerts, first working with Norman Granz, another tireless supporter or civil rights; and subsequently for agent and entrepreneur Joe Glaser, who managed Louis Armstrong. In 1948 Glaser created her own music publicity and management company.

In an era where musicians were often taken advantage of by their managers and where women were not accepted beyond traditional professions of secretary, teaching or nursing, Garner and Glaser formed a powerful and loyal duo. In 1950 they founded their own publishing company, Octave Music, thereby ensuring greater royalties and control over Garner's career. In the 1960's Octave sued Columbia (and won) for unauthorized release of recorded material, a landmark case that had a lasting impact on the music industry. Their partnership lasted until Garner's death in 1977. Glaser continued to manage Garner's catalogue and licensing until her passing in 2014, most notably taking documentarian Ken Burns to task for his omission of Garner from his "Jazz" series.

In 1950 Garner played a historic solo recital at the revered Cleveland Music Hall, a venue for traditionally classical concerts, and later that year gave a concert at New York City's Town Hall. In 1958 Garner became the first and only jazz artist to perform under classical impresario Sol Hurok (Hurok did book Benny Goodman in Carnegie Hall before World War II), and recitals and recording sessions gradually replaced his club performances. Body and Soul was released in 1952, and Too Marvelous for Words in 1954. Frequently seen playing on TV in the 1950's-1960's,

Garner's unique style drew both fans and imitators. Fellow Pittsburgh native Art Blakey originally took up the piano until Garner outclassed him one night and the owner of the club suggested Blakey try the drums, which he did.

While he wrote more than 200 songs original compositions and recorded numerous albums, Garner is best known for one composition, "Misty", and one album, Concert By The Sea, both of which today are considered music classics.

Misty - In 1954 Garner recorded "Misty" as a 32-bar instrumental on the album "Contrasts," which reached #30 on the pop charts. However, Glaser and Garner hounded several Tin Pan Alley lyricists to write lyrics and Johnny Burke responded. In 1959 Johnny Mathis recorded it on his album "Heavenly," reaching #12 on the US Pop Singles chart, selling 2.5 million US sales and becoming one of his signature songs.

The lush ballad pervaded popular culture. Throughout most of the 1960's, fans started their day to "Misty" used as the Today Show theme. In 1971, it was the centerpiece of jazz aficionado Clint Eastwood's film "Play Misty For Me," paying $25,000 to license the song. In his first film as a director, Eastwood starred as a late-night disk jockey who has a fling with one of his listeners. Spurned, she stalks him by calling in requests every night, saying "Play 'Misty' for me." It has been featured in numerous television shows (Cheers, Saturday Night Live, Magnum PI, The Muppet Show) and films, (Oscar nominated film Silver Linings Playbook).

"Misty" has been covered many times, most notably by Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billy Eckstine, Andy Williams, Julie London and Frank Sinatra. In 1962 Stan Kenton recorded it on his LP Adventures In Jazz. Ray Stevens recorded a country version, which rose to #3 on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles and in 1975 won a Grammy for his country arrangement of the song. In 1991 Garner's version was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame; and in 2002 Mathis' vocal version was also inducted.

In 2000, ASCAP ranked "Misty" as the twelfth most popular song of the 20th century. Since 1954 no other song published has been recorded by more jazz artists except for Duke Ellington's "Satin Doll."

Concert By The Sea - On September 19, 1955 Garner's trio was hired to play in a converted church at the Fort Ord military base in Carmel, California, by disk jockey Jimmy Lyons, with no plans to make a recording. Glaser saw backstage that, per Will Friedman's 2009 Wall Street Journal article, jazz fan Will Thornbury brought a tape recorder to capture the event for himself and fellow servicemen. She told him "I'll give you copies of every record Erroll ever made, but I can't let you keep that tape."

Glaser took the tape and brought it back to New York, where she played it for George Avakian, the head of Columbia Records jazz division. One of Columbia Records best-selling albums of the decade, it featured "I'll Remember April," "Teach Me Tonight," "Autumn Leaves," and "Mambo Carmel-by-the-sea."

Although the acoustics were less than perfect (it's hard to hear bassist Eddie Cochran and drummer Denzil Best) and the piano slightly out of tune, it captured the essence of Garner's improvisation, becoming the #1 record in Garner's career and one of the most popular jazz albums of all time. Friedman writes "It's not hard to hear why: from the first notes onward, Garner plays like a man inspired – on fire, even. He always played with a combination of wit, imagination, amazing technical skill and sheer joy far beyond nearly all of his fellow pianists, but on this particular night he reached a level exceeding his usual Olympian standard."

In September 2015 Octave Music and SONY Legacy released a new and updated version of Concert by The Sea. This 3-CD box set contains the complete live concert recording including 11 previously unreleased tracks, the original edited Columbia release from 1956 (digitally restored and remastered at The Magic Shop, NYC using the Plangent Process) and bonus material including announcer Jimmy Lyons and interviews with the Erroll Garner trio: Denzil DaCosta Best, Eddie Calhoun, and Garner himself, recorded directly after the concert.

In the 1950's and 1960's Garner continued to record (Feeling Is Believing, Other Voices, Paris Impressions) and added film composing to his repertoire. In 1963 Garner scored A New Kind Of Love starring Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. He released Erroll Garner Plays Gershwin and Kern, Dancing on the Ceiling and Easy to Love. In 1968, he appeared on Danish TV with bassist Ike Isaacs, drummer Jimmie Smith and bongo player Jose Mangual for taped appearance that was made into the documentary Erroll Garner in Copenhagen.

In the 1970's Garner continued to tour internationally and record albums. Tragically, while still at the prime of his career, Garner was diagnosed with lung cancer. On January 2, 1977, he passed away at just 55, buried at the Homewood Cemetery in Pittsburgh, leaving behind a rich legacy of great music that is still enjoyed today. For example, from October 1, 1976-September 30, 1985, Misty was one of ASCAP's 16 most performed standards, listed with "White Christmas", "Over the Rainbow", "As Time Goes By" And "The Way We Were."

In 1995 Garner was chosen as a subject for the US Post Office stamp series, along with fellow jazz greats Louis Armstrong, Eubie Blake, John Coltrane, Coleman Hawkins, James P. Johnson, Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus and Jelly Roll Morton, again demonstrating Garner's place in jazz history.

The late trumpeter Clark Terry summed it up simply, "The man was complete. He could do it all."

Custodial History

The collection was inherited by Susan Rosenberg, niece of Martha Glaser, in December 2014. From the early 1950's-1970's, Erroll Garner's long-time manager, Ms. Glaser, collected this material from record labels, recording studios, live performance venue engineers, and studios, which, per the client, she kept labeled and in metal filing cabinets in a New York City office between 1977 and 2008, after which the material was moved to climate controlled storage facility in New York City.

Acquisition Information

Gift of the Estate of Martha Glaser on June 15, 2015.

Processing Information

This collection was inventoried, organized, catalogued, rehoused, and digitized under the direction of music archivist Jocelyn Arem with assistance from Emma Munger, Pete Kennedy, Michael Mercurio, Kathryn Littlefield, Mary Kidd, Jessica Thompson, Kabir Hermon, John Demetros, Kevin Russo, Doug Bleek, Rebecca Marrone, Sophie Brill, Cat Guzman, Dawn Reel, Susan Rosenberg, and Briggan Krauss. Series  III. 653675 Sheet Music

Scope and Content Notes

The Sheet Music series contains written orchestrations, also called lead sheets or band arrangements, which were used by the studio musicians and/or by road musicians. As Garner did not read or write music, he never used these, but his groups did. Orchestrations are different from the handwritten lyrics or music composed by the original composer. Lead sheet arrangements are written by staff arrangers based on music provided by the producer and/or composer, and are then scored for the performing group.

Section:  653048 Reel-to-Reel Tapes

Scope and Content Notes

Approximately 1,323 1950's-1970's master, safety and unknown open reel recordings (about three quarters mono and a quarter stereo), recorded on 3-track, 4-track, 8-track, 16-track and 24-track machines, illustrating the advancement in recording technology throughout the years. Duplicate master tapes are usually either safety tapes and/or those tapes with different sound mixes or arrangements that were used to select a final version. Mixes can be found with brass overdubs, different guitar, piano and bass balances, etc. Duplicate 1980's recordings are included that may have been copied for remastered re-issues.

Most of the original boxes include handwritten dates, locations, relevant numbers, song listings and production notes. Approximately three quarters of the tapes were recorded on ¼" tape and another fifth or so on ½", with the remaining group on 1" and 2".

Recordings feature Garner in the studio for Columbia, Atlantic, BMG, CBS, Gotham Recording, Polygram, Octave Records, Associated Recording Studios, Capitol, A&R, Blue Note, Mercury, RCA, etc. Notable albums include "Erroll Garner Plays Gershwin and Kern," "Dreamstreet," "That's My Kick," "Up In Erroll's Room," "Feeling Is Believing," "Magician," " A New Kind Of Garner," "Eleven," "Movie Favorites," (Japanese), "A New Kind Of Love" soundtrack, "A Night At The Movies," a recording in an Australian studio most likely done on tour, plus the live recording from the landmark "Concert By The Sea."

Others include Garner live performances, compilation tapes of Garner compositions, solo piano sessions that have not been released, versions of "I Can't Get Started" and "Just Blues" (and others) with Garner on the harpsichord, plus a number of tapes entitled "noodling" where Garner is simply improvising. There is a 1956 session with Nat Pierce doing arrangements for the orchestra, original tunes, not full songs, sketches and rehearsals. Other well-known Garner songs include "Misty," including out-takes, "A Fine Romance," "Dreamstreet," "Dreamy," "Gaslight," etc.

Television, radio and live concert performances include WHUR Howard University, The Tonight Show, Campus Concert, One World Performance, 1959 DJ convention, Dick Cavett Show, Pearl Bailey Show, 1956 Copenhagen radio performance, TV performance in Stockholm, Sweden, 1958 Detroit Masonic Temple, Arthur Godfrey Show, Godfrey Time, the Jackie Gleason Show, Balletap Show, the game show "Play Your Hunch," where he plays three songs and writes on impromptu; the 1963 Seattle World's Fair "One World" Concert, Village Gate, Amsterdam Concert (including a stereo master) and a 1958 Burlington, VT performance.

Each reel holds between 1-20 songs, with most containing anywhere from three to 10. Production notes are often included. A database located in the the ASC Reading Room can be sesarched to identify reel information inlcuding inventory number, song, length, notes, format, band or solo, sound quality, etc. for most of the recordings where applicable.

Content includes live and television performances, such as a 1964 Garner performance in Belgium; 1962 Holland performance, cassette reading "Four Original Tunes," Garner playing solo piano, 1952 Montreal performance, 1966 in NYC, 1964 "Jazz Nocturne," 1975 DC performance, 1940's Concerts, 1963 European concerts, Steve Allen Show, BBC, 1950 Woody Herman program, 1975 Birthday Party, 1958 Sy Johnson "For Erroll" Tribute, 1972 All-Stars with Coleman Hawkins and Jimmy Heath; Phil Schap, "Jazz Sundae," 1974 Tonight Show; Gary Giddins Show, 1972 Australia; 1948 With John Collins & Slam Stewart in Paris 1948; a tape marked "Erroll's Last Show," February 21, 1975 at Mr. Kelly's Tonight Show with June 1972 Tonight Show appearance with Flip Wilson subbing for Carson; studio performances, Garner bantering with band, solo work, numerous original compositions and several versions of "Misty."

Garner interviews include the Arthur Godfrey Show, NPR "Morning Edition; an interview on Cape Cod, NPR Jazz Profile, 1966 Garner interview with George Shearing and Steve Allen; a 1966 "The Joy of A Genius" NPR Jazz Profile on Garner; etc.

Also, numerous interviews regarding Garner's music and legacy with Martha Glaser are represented. Interviews with Art Blakey, George Avakian, Joe Turner, Red Callendar Billy Taylor, Carl McVicker, Slam Stewart, Teddy Wilson and Illinois Jacquet among other are included. A January 7, 1977 recording of Garner's funeral service, a 1988 Ron Della Chiesa WGBH tribute, and 1999 "A Portrait of Erroll Garner" program from the Netherlands can also be found among the cassettes.

It appears that there is some content overlap with the acetates and tapes. Therefore, there is a lot of original material comprising interviews with Garner, Glaser or other celebrities talking about Garner, show performances, solo performances, and studio work.

Section:  653046 Acetates, Discs, Test Pressings and Promotional Records

Contains approximately 652 discs including items composted of aluminum, acetate (lacquer), and vinyl. Sizes vary from 7-inches to 16-inches. Among the disc recordings are full albums, test pressings, commercial recordings, live recordings, promotional recordings, reference stampers, 16"" Muzak discs likely containing Garner compositions. Most discs have been digitized. Many discs are housed in their original sleeves, some containing handwritten annotations likely written by the engineer or producer. Condition ranges from fair to excellent. Discs that are believed to have been part of Garner's personal colleciton exhibit cracks, scratches, and chips. Also included is the 2016 release two-album set Ready Take One which contains previously unreleased tracks.

Series  VIII. 652476 Martha Glaser Papers 1921-2010

Biography

Pioneering Jazz music manager and civil rights advocate, Martha Glaser, was born February 15, 1921 in Duquesne, Pennsylvania, daughter of Samuel and Pearl Farkas, Hungarian immigrants, and sister to Bella Rosenberg. Martha Glaser (nee Farkas) attended Southwestern High School in Detroit and earned her Bachelor's degree in Government with three minors in Economics, Sociology and History from Wayne State University in Detroit in 1942.

Ms. Glaser planned to pursue a career in public affairs and journalism, but following the Detroit riots of 1943 she became increasingly active in supporting human rights, taking a central role in the formation of the Entertainment Industry Emergency Committee to combat race hatred. Calling to "ensure the right of all people to live in our nation without discrimination," Ms. Glaser advocated, "a coordinated approach to unleash the optimum weight of the entertainment industry in the offensive against race hate."

Ms. Glaser was the first Jewish American woman to be hired by the city of Chicago to work for the Human Rights commission to oppose discrimination. As part of that effort, she organized Jazz concerts working first with Norman Granz, promoter of "Jazz at the Philharmonic," (himself an advocate for the growing civil rights movement) and subsequently with agent/impresario Joe Glaser. She then went to work for the Disc Corporation of America as a publicist and organized the Jazz for justice tours throughout the late 1940's.

In 1948 she created her own music management company and settled permanently in New York City, where the Jazz scene was in full flower on 52nd Street. It was in that milieu that Ms. Glaser met pianist Erroll Garner, and the course of her life was set. Mr. Garner, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was a self-taught prodigy who astounded the music world with his seemingly limitless ability to improvise on the keyboard, despite a lack of any formal music training. While Garner was an artist, not a businessman, Ms. Glaser found that by combining her love for Jazz, her civil rights advocacy, and her innate business acumen, she was able, after signing an exclusive contract with Mr. Garner, to advance his career onto a level of prestige hitherto unavailable to Jazz artists.

Garner's 1955 composition "Misty", quickly became a classic, and was the twelfth most played ASCAP song of the 20th Century, due in no small part to Ms. Glaser's untiring efforts to promote and maintain Mr. Garner's image as a world-class composer. Her success in that effort is evidenced in his long list of laurels, including a triumphant appearance at Carnegie Hall, winning the French Prix du Disque, and securing the only Jazz music booking contract with classical music agent Sol Hurok. Mr. Garner shared that roster with Andres Segovia, Isaac Stern, and the Bolshoi Ballet.

Ms. Glaser's vision encompassed recording as well, and she was a pioneer in producing Mr. Garner's discs in the then-nascent Long-Playing format. In a singular instance, she instinctively secured a simple tape recording of one of Mr. Garner's trio shows, in Carmel California, and when it was released as "Concert by the Sea" on Columbia, it became one of the largest selling Jazz releases of all time.

Throughout this unbroken record of success, Ms. Glaser never lost sight of her early devotion to equal rights; she inserted a clause into Mr. Garner's contracts prohibiting segregation of his audiences, a decade before the Civil Rights Act declared the practice illegal. Mr. Garner's worldwide fame notwithstanding, Ms. Glaser shunned publicity herself, although her record of success in the music business, which was dominated in the 1950's by males in executive positions, is testimony to her tenacious hold on a position of equality among her colleagues.

Ms. Glaser was also a pioneer in the concept of musical artists owning the copyrights to their own work, an unusual concept at the time, and one of great benefit to Mr. Garner, who reciprocated with twenty seven years of loyalty to Ms. Glaser and their co-owned publishing and production company, Octave Music. After Mr. Garner's career was cut short by his untimely death in 1977, Ms. Glaser maintained her tireless effort to keep his music in its premiere position, securing hundreds of licensed usages and overseeing a continual stream of LP and CD releases drawn for her trove of studio productions of the pianist's work.

Thanks to Ms. Glaser's diligence and perseverance and in keeping with her wishes, the full scope of Garner's recordings, including many newly discovered unreleased treasures as well as his first known recording in 1937 and his final concert, have been archived. These recordings, photographs, video, symphonic scores, memorabilia, legal and civil rights documentation span the tandem careers of two unique individuals, one an original jazz improviser, and the other a true innovator in the areas of human rights, the arts, and business.

Ms. Glaser died on December 3, 2014 at the age of 93.
